BYOK explained

What is BYOK?
Bring your own key.

BYOK ("bring your own key") means you connect your own API key from an AI provider — OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, or xAI — instead of paying a subscription that bundles model access. You pay the provider directly for what you use, and the app charges only for its workspace.

BYOK in one sentence

BYOK splits a chat subscription into two relationships: an app that provides the interface, and a provider that serves the models and bills your key directly. You choose them separately, so you are not locked into one company's models or one flat fee.

BYOK vs a subscription

A subscription sells the app and the models at once. BYOK unbundles them.

What BYOK actually costs

With BYOK there are two bills. The workspace fee is fixed and small. The provider bill is metered: you pay for the tokens you use, at the provider's published rates, with no markup added by the app.

  • Workspace: $2/month, or $39 once for Lifetime Access — no token markup
  • Providers: billed at their published API rates, straight to your account
  • Search and built-in model usage on Pro is covered by plan credits; on Lifetime you use your own search key
  • Set a spend limit at each provider so a runaway script cannot burn your budget

Estimate model costs with the LLM cost calculator and see the full plan on the pricing page.

Two bills, both transparent

A subscription hides model cost inside a flat price. BYOK shows it: a fixed workspace fee plus metered usage you can cap.

Heavy user? A subscription can win. Light or mixed-model user? BYOK usually costs less and gives you every model.

How BYOK works in three steps

  1. 1. Create a provider API key

A key is a spending credential for the provider's API. It is separate from any consumer subscription, so ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Google AI Pro do not include API access.

  2. 2. Connect it securely

Paste the key into the app. In MultimodelChat it is encrypted at rest in your browser's vault, sent over TLS for a request, and used in memory — not stored on our servers.

  3. 3. Chat and pay the provider

Pick a model, chat, and switch models mid-conversation. The provider bills your key for the tokens you use; the app adds no markup.

Who should use BYOK

BYOK is a good fit if you…

  • Use more than one provider's models
  • Want to control spend and set usage limits
  • Prefer your keys stay under your control
  • Value switching models mid-task

A subscription may be better if you…

  • Use one provider only and want zero setup
  • Prefer a single flat bill over metered usage
  • Push one model to its limit every month

BYOK questions

Is BYOK cheaper than a subscription?

It depends on usage. A $2/month workspace plus metered provider usage is usually cheaper for light and moderate use, and can be more expensive for very heavy use. A flat subscription wins when you consistently max out one provider's models every month.

Is it safe to give an app my API key?

A provider API key is a spending credential, not a password to your account. Use a dedicated key, set a spend limit at the provider, and revoke it any time. In MultimodelChat keys are encrypted at rest in your browser's vault and sent over TLS only with your requests.

Do I still pay for ChatGPT or Claude?

No. BYOK replaces the bundled subscription for chat. You create a provider API key (separate from ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, or Google AI Pro), and pay the provider for what you use.

Which models can I use with BYOK?

Any model the providers you connect expose — GPT-5.x, Claude Opus and Sonnet, Gemini, Grok, plus open-weight models through OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Groq, or a local Ollama server.
